Chef Rich Sweeney Enthusiastically Joins Fifth Annual HIV/AIDS Fundraiser

Jan. 24, 2011 — SAN DIEGO – Chef Rich Sweeney, owner and executive chef of R Gang Eatery, has announced that his restaurant will donate 100% of its sales on Thurs., April 28 on for Dining Out for Life® San Diego. The fifth annual event will benefit HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs at The San Diego LGBT Community Center.

Featuring enthusiastic community participation and the best and most generous of San Diego area restaurants, Dining Out for Life® is an event everyone can participate in simply by dining out with family and friends for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner at the participating restaurants on April 28.

These local establishments will generously donate 25 to 100 percent of their food and liquor sales on that day to benefit The Center’s HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs. In 2010, 100 local businesses participated in this event.

The R Gang Eatery/Sweeney commitment marks the first time a San Diego establishment has contributed at the 100% level.

“It’s important for everyone to step up and be involved in the community. HIV/AIDS is no longer that thing that happens to someone in a city far from you. People everywhere are becoming infected every day, yes, even here in San Diego,” said Sweeney, also known for his participation on the Bravo television series “Top Chef.” “We all need to come together, regardless of whether we’re gay, straight, bi, trans or whatever. We need to do our part and help put essential funds and services back into the community, and we can do that by doing what we do every day — going out to eat.

“As a business owner, it’s important to me to give back to the community where I not only operate a restaurant, but where I live and go out,” Sweeney said. “Sure, we are going over the top by donating 100% of our sales for the day to Dining Out for Life. But think about how many people’s lives we can touch by doing it. That, alone, is more than worth it.”
